Despite signing former Pro Bowl quarterback Jameis Winston, the New York Giants are apparently still looking for a quarterback.
The Giants have agreed to a two-year contract with Winston, according to multiple outlets on Friday. The $8 million contract for the 31-year-old could be increased depending on incentives.
In addition to Winston, the Giants have been linked to a number of veteran quarterbacks, including four-time MVP Aaron Rodgers. Mike Garafolo of NFL Network claims that the Giants’ pursuit of Rodgers or any other starting quarterback is unaffected by the signing of Jameis. Winston merely gives a quarterback room that had only Tommy DeVito before more depth.
Having Winston on the roster gives the Giants a few options going forward. The Florida State alum has spent most of the last five seasons as a backup. He could fill that role again behind someone like Rodgers or Russell Wilson.
However, Winston also has 87 NFL starts to his credit. If the Giants decide to select a passer in the next NFL draft, he could be a good bridge quarterback. Winston may be a natural at being a mentor because of his love of giving amazing pregame speeches.
Winston spent the previous season with the Cleveland Browns, playing in 12 games (7 starts). In addition to throwing for 2,121 yards, he had 12 interceptions and 13 touchdowns.
