Ed O’Neill, the famed actor known for his roles in “Married… with Children” and “Modern Family,” has a fascinating connection to football. In 1969, he was signed by the Pittsburgh Steelers as an undrafted free agent. During his first training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, he was trying to learn the outside linebacker position while attempting to make the team.
However, he was cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers, which led him back to his true passion: acting. His iconic role as Al Bundy in “Married… with Children” and later as Jay Pritchett in “Modern Family” solidified his place in television history.
"When I got cut by the Steelers I always had the same dream that I was back at Latrobe..
Every year I would have the same dream but the only difference was I was the age I actually am"

Ed O’Neil’s Dream After Getting Omitted From Pittsburgh Steelers
O’Neil stated, “When I got cut, every year after that, I would have a recurring dream, at least once or twice a year, and the dream was I’m back in Latrobe, St. Vincent’s College, on the sidelines, in uniform, scrimmage going on, assistant coach comes out and says, ‘You’re in the next series.”
“I say, ‘OK, coach.’ And that would basically be the dream. Every year. The only difference is, every year I was the age I actually was. So, this went on, and it ends with, ‘You’re in the next series. Go ahead, O’Neill’.”
Interestingly, after being cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers, Ed O’Neill experienced a recurring dream. For over five decades, he would dream that he was back at Latrobe, on the sidelines, in uniform, with a scrimmage going on.
An assistant coach would approach him and say, “You’re in the next series.” O’Neill’s dream persisted, even as he aged, until he decided to step off the football field for good.
