The NBA is no stranger to heated rivalries and on-court altercations. Recently, Chicago Bulls star DeMar DeRozan found himself in the spotlight after a confrontation with Houston Rockets’ Dillon Brooks.

The conversation, which included comments on DeRozan’s on-court altercation with Houston Rockets forward Dillon Brooks in March 2024, was highlighted by a tweet from sports news outlet Legion Hoops (@LegionHoops). The tweet captured DeRozan’s pointed remarks:

DeMar DeRozan on his altercation with Dillon Brooks:
“I’m not going to lie, I just don’t like him. And for two, don’t walk up behind me, that’s rule number one, don’t walk up on no man behind him when his back’s turned.”

This tweet sparked discussions regarding unwritten rules of conduct within the NBA and the nature of player rivalries.

The Altercation

During a game in the 2023-24 season, DeMar DeRozan and Brooks exchanged more than just basketball moves. It all began when DeRozan fouled Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green, resulting in an ejection. As Green writhed in pain, Brooks confronted DeRozan, leading to a heated exchange that required intervention from players, coaches, and officials.

DeMar DeRozan’s Candid Admission

In a recent interview, DeMar DeRozan didn’t mince words. He openly stated, “I just don’t like him.” His frustration stemmed from Brooks walking up behind him during the altercation, a breach of unwritten basketball etiquette. DeRozan emphasized the importance of respecting personal space on the court.

On-Court Rivalries vs. Mutual Respect

DeRozan distinguished his interactions with Brooks and his on-court rivalry with Draymond Green. While trash talk and competitive fire are part of the game, DeRozan acknowledged that respect and admiration exist between opponents during play. However, his relationship with Brooks lacks that mutual understanding.

Contract and Free Agency

DeRozan’s contract with the Bulls is up, and he could hit unrestricted free agency this offseason. Averaging 24 points, 5.3 assists, and 4.3 rebounds per game, he’s poised to be one of the premier free agents available. Although the Rockets have never been linked to DeRozan, their cap space and recent improvement make them an intriguing destination.
