On June 4, 2024, the 49ers and Christian McCaffrey agreed to a two-year contract extension worth a staggering $38 million. This eye-popping figure translates to $19 million per year, making McCaffrey the undisputed leader in running back compensation. His previous contract, signed with the Carolina Panthers in 2020, already placed him atop the market, averaging $16.015 million annually.

Christian McCaffrey’s Impact

Since joining the 49ers in 2022, McCaffrey has been the heartbeat of Kyle Shanahan’s offense. In the 2023 season, he led the NFL in rushing yards (1,459) and contributed significantly in the passing game with 564 receiving yards. His 14 rushing touchdowns and seven receiving touchdowns showcased his dual-threat abilities.

Guaranteed Money and Security

The extension includes $24 million in fully guaranteed money, providing McCaffrey financial security for the next four years. He’ll earn $16 million in 2024 and $16.205 million in 2025. The deal keeps him under contract until 2027, ensuring stability for both player and team.

Comparing the Market

McCaffrey’s extension eclipses Alvin Kamara’s deal (signed in 2020) at $15 million annually and Jonathan Taylor’s extension (signed in 2021) at $14 million per year. Saquon Barkley’s recent contract with the Philadelphia Eagles stands at $12.583 million annually. McCaffrey’s impact and versatility warranted this lucrative investment.
