Dwyane Wade, a legendary figure in Miami Heat history, recently had a statue unveiled in his honour. However, the unveiling didn’t go as planned, with many, including renowned sports commentator Bill Simmons, criticizing the statue’s appearance.

Simmons, known for his outspoken opinions, took to Twitter to express his disappointment with the statue:

“The biggest loser of the day was Dwyane Wade who had the worst statue of all time. It looked like somebody who had emerged from a fire and lived. It was like Jim Carrey’s [Fire Marshal Bill] sketch. Can you imagine having a statue look that bad of yourself being unveiled? What would you even say? ‘Uh, thanks?’ There’s never been a worse sports statue ever. I mean it got rightfully killed today.”

The Unveiling

The statue, which was unveiled on October 27, 2024, outside the Kaseya Center in Miami, was meant to commemorate Wade’s iconic “This is my house” moment from the 2009 playoffs against the Chicago Bulls. However, the reaction on social media was overwhelmingly negative, with many fans criticizing the statue for its lack of resemblance to Wade.

Artist’s Defense

The artists behind the statue, Omri Amrany and Oscar León, stood by their work despite the criticism. Amrany told local reporters, “I don’t think anybody else can do better than that. It is what it is, and we will love it forever.” He also encouraged people to see the statue in person, suggesting that it might look different up close.

Dwyane Wade himself addressed the criticism, acknowledging that he was aware of the social media reaction but remained pleased with the statue. “Social media world is about opinions. Send some memes. We don’t care. It was a special moment yesterday, my family and I. It don’t need to look like me. It’s an artistic version of me.” Wade also mentioned that he was involved in the creation process and was satisfied with the final product.
